In 2012, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships will be hosted by Victoria University of Wellington from 8 July to 15 July. Students from all over Asia, Australia and New Zealand are invited to join us to debate topics of global importance during the day, and enjoy social events at venues across the city during the night.

Registration

Registration will occur in two stages.

The first stage is institutional registration: universities will indicate an institutional representative and the number of teams and judges required. Institutional registration is closed.

The second stage is individual registration: team members from registered institutions will secure a place and provide necessary personal information. Individual registration is now open, and will close on the 19th of May. The form is available here.

Payment

Tournament registration is set at $750 New Zealand Dollars per debater or adjudicator. Each institution is responsible for ensuring that any international transaction fees are paid.

Half payment of is due Monday the 2nd of April; full payment is due Tuesday 1st of May. Bank account details will be sent to the institution representatives after the registration phase closes, and be available on this website.

Schedule

Check In

Check in at the accomodation, with an unofficial welcome later in the evening.

Opening Ceremony

The official Opening Ceremony will showcase New Zealand culture and provide a warm welcome to tournament participants. It will be held at Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand's national museum.

First Day

Debaters will meet up at Victoria University's Kelburn Campus for the first of three days of debating. The evening's entertainment comes in the form of a low-key BBQ night showcasing the very best of kiwi cuisine: a sausage sizzle.

Test Debate

The test debate is a well-earned break from the rigours of competitive debating. This event is a light-hearted comedy debate and a chance to relax before going into the final rounds.

Break Night

Join us on the waterfront in anticipation of the announcement of which teams make it through to the next stage of debating.

Women's Night

Women's Night celebrates female participation in debating with a showcase debate held at Parliament. Australasia's best female debaters will go head-to-head, with an address from a prominent and successful speaker, in recognition of the achievements of women since the inaugral Austrlasian Debating Championships in 1975.

Championship Dinner

This formal dinner is a chance to recognise the achievements of all who attend the tournament.

Grand Final

The Grand Final will be held in the Embassy Theatre and is perhaps the most prestigious event in the Australasian debating calender.
